The series, Paintings 2020, is an amalgamation of the various visual languages that I have explored and meticulously studied. These surfaces for intellectual play encapsulate the idea of "the daily practice of painting."
In the Nebraska paintings, I observed natural phenomena in the surrounding landscape to create imaginary spaces that were in dialogue with the formal vocabulary I had built.
In "Materiality and Monochromatic," I elaborated upon the impotence behind of the previous body of work by using the process of layering various types of painting modes and image making to create heavily built up surfaces upon which to paint. I then utilized monochromatic painting as a way to compositionally balance the painting.
In "Neutrality and Edge," I took my interest in non-traditional materials a step further and used strand board and mdf board as surfaces. These paintings were placed within the spectrum of monochromatic painting as a paradoxical statement, subverting the historical notions of this genre.
In "88," I decided to enter into the discourse of monochromatic painting. I added non-traditional materials such as tape and house paint, a formal continuity from the previous series, to create hybrid paintings that were guided by the process.
By utilizing my understanding of abstraction in conjunction with an exploratory nature in mark making, I created the series, "Composition, Randomness, and Phrases." In this body of work, I was asking myself the question, "How does one make a painting?"
